Why Peace Heroes?

If we don’t teach our children peace, someone else will teach them violence.

— Colman McCarthy

The stakes today are too high to be focusing only on knowledge and academics in our schools. As issues of inequality, racism, environmental degradation, conflict, and violence ravage the globe, more and more teachers are looking for ways to address social change, solidarity with the oppressed, antiracism, and nonviolent activism with their students, but they lack the resources with which to do this.

Imagine if classrooms around the world were places of welcome, where diversity was celebrated and nonviolence was part of school culture. Imagine if students everywhere learned about the world around them through the lens of peace, not war, so that they could become the next generation of peace heroes.

Our Vision

Our goal is to provide schools across the globe with the resources they need to empower their students to respond to our world’s brokenness with courage, creativity, compassion, and hope.

We want to give students new heroes and help them internalize that each one of them can be a peace hero—that “peace begins here, with me!”

How We Do It

From Nelson Mandela in South Africa to Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan, from Wangari Maathai in Kenya to Thich Nhat Hanh in Vietnam, our program features stories of real-life peace heroes from around the globe whose lives testify to the transformative power of peace. Through their stories, your students learn about hardships, injustices, and conflicts all over the world and how these brave people stood up to bring healing and wholeness to these situations.

These stories will inspire and equip your students to become agents of profound and positive change in their own communities. Together we can raise up a generation that will have the capacity to restore dignity to our broken world.

It was a privilege and honor to teach my students about each of the peace heroes…And yet, of all the inspiring, motivating individuals we learned from, I am delighted that the simplest notion of sharing the belovedness of another human being is what consistently made a sustaining impact.
